Archipelago of Artistic Practices is a Research Summit organised by Jubilee and M HKA based on Eavatea, a digital infrastructure for mapping research-based and transdisciplinary practices. The programme and exhibition take place in conjunction with M HKA’s major exhibition The Geopolitics of Infrastructure and includes the participation of many of its exhibiting artists. The Research Summit kicks off with performances and participatory events during the opening evening of the exhibition (Thursday 12 June), and then centres around four thematic days, addressing: The Geopolitics of Infrastructure (14 June), The Infrastructure of Archives (15 June), Archipelago of Artistic Practices (20 June), and Mapping and Performing Infrastructure (21 June). Extra Muros: there will be a Reading Room and a Live Conversation at Out of Sight (16 and 19 June).
The Research Summit focuses on the premise of ‘learning by doing’. Collective interventions and moments of constructive reflection, including screenings, performances and walks, explore themes of the exhibition and interrogate the Eavatea interface as an innovative relational infrastructure that seeks to inspire, initiate and underpin new research-based artistic trajectories.
Currently under development through a partnership with nadine and Atelier Cartographique, Jubilee named Eavatea after a word noted on a map drawn by Tupaia, a Polynesian 18th century master navigator. Tupaia merged the Western Mercator mapping paradigm with traditional wayfinding forms guided by nature and storytelling. His converging of these two systems of representation proved to be inspiring for the development of Eavatea, eliciting such questions as: how would the interface explore new narrative possibilities and visualise, display, archive and distribute artistic practices that are in situ, nomadic, collective or transdisciplinary? How would Eavatea embody the situated knowledge generated by these practices and, most importantly, highlight possible links between them? As a research infrastructure for innovation and commoning, and also built with open-source software, Eavatea brings production, distribution and financing into novel alignment. Opening up to new forms of solidarity through a hybrid of digital and physical relations, Eavatea raises pertinent questions around art’s predominant infrastructure with its focus on the artist as individual practitioner.
The discursive programme brings together artists and researchers for an ambitious programme of talks and activities in support of rethinking artistic infrastructure sustainably. It seeks to offer participants a convivial space for opening insights and opportunities into the possibilities of collaborative research, commoning of resources, and cooperative distribution for artistic practice.
The exhibition takes place across M HKA’s Inbox space and 6th floor. It presents a number of artistic research narratives – objects, documents, protocols, etc – and imagines how these various art practices can be connected based on their singular research trajectories. As such, it is conceived as a spatial transposition of the tool, with a strong emphasis on the relational and narrative potential that Eavatea embodies.

During this Caveat Reading Room, we gathered around the workbook of Clémentine Vaultier. Initially the result of her research on heat and fire as a performative culture-producing process in the framework of the MA Autonomous Design at KASK, it followed the editorial principle of rising temperature and is in continual progress.
After a short introduction, a collaborative leak from the workbook (with Karolien Chromiak), each participant was invited to browse it and then contribute to the conversation from what sparked their interest.

8. Engraving Property

Unfolding from the chapter 1650°C on my research on warmth, “Engraving property” is a pre-research on iron-casted firebacks. It was shaped for the occasion of a design residency open call hosted in a fireplaces equipped building.
Around 1650°C in my research on rising warmth (p. 107), I came to be interested in the firebacks artefacts and their production processes. Through this topic, I was interested in the fusion point between vernacular, craftsmanship, industry, reproductible... I also had strong interests in the symbolic surrounding the fireplace and in the heraldry of firebacks for what they inform us about social memberships, power relations.

Clémentine presents a set up that seems simple at first glance. She is welcoming the jury and spectators to gather on a round woolen carpet. A video is shown that documents the making of a ceramic oven. A joyful participatory project that she carried out with fellow students. The video explains her interest in heat and fire as a transformative culture producing process. A workbook expands the subject by combining historic facts and fictions, imagery that was found online and other elements in a unity in which temperature is the editorial principle.
Clémentine shows her skills in conveying curiosity and conviviality. The work is a creative expression of her personal artistic vision and it demonstrates an original line of thinking and acting in relation to contemporary dynamics and discourse around artisanal production, alternative community building and the revalidation of historical and traditional application of natural processes as a source of inspiration, creation, transformation. As such it is a valuable addition to contemporary movements in the field of art and design.
The jury values the works' great sensitivity for integrating the spectator. The choice for understated esthetics and avoiding a theatrical setting is an asset. Clémentine embodies a process-based approach that does not allow for enclosure into a 'piece' but thrives on openness and accessibility.
The jury admires the deep research she has conducted, and the fact that this is not limited only to a phase leading up to the production of the work, but is an important and integral part of the final presentation.
The structure of the book, organized around rising temperatures, conveys a deep reflection on the entwinement between the chemical and the cultural. It is at once an intellectually exciting piece and one that leaves much room open to the viewer’s imagination thanks to the vitality of its aesthetics (beautiful assemblage of pictures, stimulating texts). Also, the barbecue was awesome.
Raising excitement is a recurring element in Clémentines work attitude, i.e: the excitement of our togetherness, the excitement we find in acknowledging the elementary forces of nature. And it is also with excitement that the jury perceived Clémentine's work. One major question remains. What is the appropriate context in which this type of work is best shown?
The jury thinks that Clémentines work is demanding and evoking new dispositives for perception. A rare quality.

Clémentine Vaultier presents a process based work with the title 'Mud Max' that focuses on heat and fire as a culture producing, trans-formative, energy. She designed a warm welcoming carpet that invites participants to discover historic facts and fictions around togetherness and fire which she collected in a book that is central to the work. Clémentine embodies a process based approach that thrives on openness and accessibility.
The jury highly values this joyful participatory project. It shows great sensitivity for creating togetherness, and skills in co-creation, using group situations as a creative pulse, and integrating the spectator in the work. The deliberate choice for understated aesthetics and avoidance of an overly dramatic setting are great assets. A continuous production of tools, objects and research are integrated in the creative process. The jury is curious for the future development of the work and which place it will generate for itself and others in the cultural field.

This pdf is the connecting project of my MA Autonomous Design. The publication is the result of my research on heat and fire as a transformative/performative culture-producing process.
It combines (art) historic and anthropological facts and fictions, imagery that was found online, my own sketches, and life experiments connecting interests and methods such as food preparation, ceramics, and material research in relation to contemporary dynamics and discourse around artisanal production and alternative community building. It reflects on the intertwinement between the chemical, technical and the cultural: indeed, warmth was looked at as a physical phenomenon as well as a social feeling.

4. Mud Max
film documentation of the event Paper Kiln for Clay Barbecue, 13 min
Mud Max is a film edited to document the 2018 event paper kiln for clay barbecue. It follows the building and firing of a handmade ceramic barbecue and the whole social gathering and technical transmission it involved.
A story about proto ceramics exploding on the fire inside a prehistoric hut precedes the documentation. This fictional part can also be found as the introduction to the research on warmth with a few detours publication.

3. Paper Kiln for Clay Barbecue

Taking as a starting point the analogies between a barbecue and a ceramic kiln, this event was organised at KASK and was based on the hand building, the firing and the use of a clay barbecue.
2. Grille

Drawn with a pen, then cut with a laser. This project started with a simple drawing made on a post-it and printed in my mind when researching on analogies between the ceramic oven and the bbq. I used the scanned version on the poster communicating the event paper kiln for clay barbecue. Then I collaborated with a metal laser cut company in the south of France to produce the functional barbecue grid it was supposed to illustrate.
