The course “ Firing Together Here?” offered a collective exploration of the possibilities and challenges of woodfiring.
It started with the discovery of the ruins of a castle on the edge of the Sonian wood forest. There was lying leftovers of a ceramic activity, with clay, tools, discarded ovens...
I initiated this experimental project in 2021 during several transdisciplinary modules and workshops. We focused on the local territory, resources, and collectiveness, doing archeology and experiments on site with what is left for us to use.
After a few iterations at the Château de Jolimont, we set up a space where firing would be possible at the Abbaye de la Cambre, the school's site.
We brought back the refractory bricks and tried out multiple kiln constructions, then students from the ceramics department continued the work by partially adapting Charles Bottin's kiln plan. Last year, interior design students were given the task of building a roof to protect the kiln and define this “firing” space.

Charles Bottin's lecture “The Art of Wood-Fired Kilns” will take place on Wednesday, November 5, at 6 p.m., in the Stynen Auditorium at 21 Abbaye de la Cambre (in french). Together with Charles and the B2 and B3 students, we will fire up the kiln at La Cambre the day after the lecture, on Thursday, November 6.

In the framework of Emptor we invite you to Jolimont Castle in Boitsfort (Brussels) for a group reading and discussion about the role of the collective in heritage preservation. We gather around excerpts from the text ‘Protéger le patrimoine culturel: à qui incombe la charge?’ by Marie-Sophie de Clippele, specialist in cultural heritage law.
Just as works of art, buildings and sites classified as heritage tend to be governed along criteria of historical interest and conservation logic. Their use value and inscription in the present often remain undiscussed. Even if public authorities already intervene in what is considered an absolute property right, the fundamental right to cultural heritage opens possibilities to re-think cultural property regimes and create space for a third player: the collective.
Marie-Sophie de Clippele, specialist in cultural heritage law, developed a theoretical model for a property of shared interest (‘propriété d’intérêt partagé’).
Taking theory into practice, Clémentine Vaultier opens the door of Jolimont for a reading room. At this castle in transition, on the edge of the Sonian Forest close to Brussels, Vaultier runs the collaborative research Cuire Ensemble Ici. Around the ruin of a ceramic wood kiln, she looks for ways to put the heat into the heritage and orient the pasts towards the future from within the collective.
