7. Un art des fours à bois, wood-firing workshop and lecture with Charles Bottin, at la Cambre,
The course “ Firing Together Here?” offered a collective exploration of the possibilities and challenges of firing at school. I initiated this experimental project in 2021 during several transdisciplinary modules and workshops. We focused on the local territory, resources, and sharing. After a few iterations at the Château de Jolimont, a place full of useful ceramic materials (including the ruins of wood-fired kilns), we set up a space where firing would be possible at the Abbaye de la Cambre, the school's site. We brought back the refractory bricks and tried out multiple kiln constructions, then Simon Barraud and Théa Goncalves continued the work by partially adapting Charles Bottin's kiln plan. Last year, interior design students were given the task of building a roof to protect the kiln and define this “firing” space. This whole organic process has led us wanting to perpetuate this educational tool, as we believe it is important for future ceramists to experience active, collective firing during their studies.

Charles Bottin's lecture “The Art of Wood-Fired Kilns” will take place on Wednesday, November 5, at 6 p.m., in the Stynen Auditorium at 21 Abbaye de la Cambre (in french). Together with Charles and the B2 and B3 students, we will fire up the kiln at La Cambre the day after the lecture, on Thursday, November 6.
